Designing Hope: Mrs. Sforza’s 8th Grade STEM Class Takes On Breast Cancer Awareness

This fall, the 8th grade STEM students at Armstrong put their engineering skills to work for a meaningful cause: creating a symbol of hope to raise awareness about breast cancer. Guided by the design modeling process, students brainstormed, planned, and refined their ideas, then took careful measurements and drew detailed blueprints for a three-dimensional breast cancer ribbon.

Sustainability was a key part of the challenge. Students built their ribbons from eco-friendly materials, learning that good design considers the planet as well as the purpose. Along the way, they practiced precision, problem-solving, and teamwork, and discovered that math, science, and creativity can come together to make a real difference.

The finished ribbons stand as more than class projects. They are reminders of strength, support, and hope for everyone affected by breast cancer, especially the three strong women of Armstrong Middle School who have survived and are still battling: Gina Little, Jess Leatherman, and Christi Roy.
