Our elementary reading curriculum is based on the The Science of Reading and Structured Literacy.

 

Structured Literacy and the Science of Reading work together to help kids learn to read in the best way possible. Research shows that reading doesn’t come naturally, so teachers use a step-by-step method to teach important skills like understanding letter sounds, sounding out words, and recognizing patterns in language. This approach, called Structured Literacy, gives all students, especially those who struggle with reading, the tools they need to succeed. By focusing on how the brain learns to read, these methods build strong foundations in reading, writing, and spelling to help every child feel confident and successful.

It also focuses on building a "growth mindset," encouraging kids to see mistakes as learning opportunities and to keep trying even when math feels hard. Teachers use regular check-ins to see how students are doing and give extra help if needed. This program helps children not only meet grade-level expectations but also gain the confidence and problem-solving skills they need for future success in math.

Mystery Science offers a hands-on, inquiry-based science curriculum designed for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Its lessons align with state standards, including the Pennsylvania STEELS standards, and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Each lesson begins with a fun and engaging question that sparks students' curiosity, followed by interactive videos and simple hands-on activities using easy-to-find materials. This approach helps students explore real-world scientific phenomena and build critical thinking skills. Mystery Science is flexible and can be used as a full curriculum or as a supplement to other teaching resources, making science fun, memorable, and accessible for all students​.
