Drummers with Attitude (DWA), the Bristol Township School District’s diverse and all-inclusive student group, performed in Washington, DC for the first time.

After hearing DWA perform at Trenton Thunder, Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick invited DWA to perform in the Capitol and that day finally came on May 5.

Students woke up early to depart from Truman at 4 a.m. After arriving in DC, 43 DWA drummers, including current students in grades 4-12 and a few alumni, toured the White House, and then enjoyed some sight-seeing and lunch.

In the afternoon, DWA gave a 20-minute performance on bucket drums in Union Square.

“Performing and touring both the White House and U.S. Capitol has always been a dream for DWA, which finally came true on a perfect day,” said Kevin Travers, DWA founder and special education teacher. “Everyone involved got to experience U.S. history in person. Then we got to perform for the crowds, which were thoroughly impressed and entertained.”

“It is a memory of a lifetime that students will forever cherish," added Travers.

DWA includes students in grades 4-12 and is like one big family. Students are welcomed of all ages, ethnicities and abilities, including some students with special needs.

When Travers founded the group in 2000, his goal was to create a mentoring program for students who feel disconnected.

“Our one requirement is respect. You respect each other and do the best you can,” said Travers.

DWA has performed around the Philadelphia region including the Wells Fargo Center (home of the Philadelphia 76ers and Flyers), Lincoln Financial Field (home of the Philadelphia Eagles), Murray Field (home of Trenton Thunder), MetLife Stadium (home of the Giants and Jets) and Hershey Park, in addition to local parades, community events and hospitals. They are excited to add Washington, DC to their list!

The community is invited to see DWA at the following upcoming performances:

  • May 27 – Penndel/Hulmeville Memorial Day Parade
  • June 1 – Hershey Park
  • July 16 – Trenton Thunder
