Harry S. Truman High School’s drama department is adding to its established history once again. Truman Drama will present Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in March 2024 as one of the first high school productions of the musical in the U.S. Truman’s production will be a regional high school premiere.
Based on the famous novel by Roald Dahl, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” features an original score composed by Marc Shaiman with lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman (“Hairspray” and “Some Like It Hot”) and a book by David Greig. The score also pays homage to the Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley score from the 1971 film with songs from the motion picture including "Candy Man," "I've Got a Golden Ticket," "Oompa Loompa Song" and "Pure Imagination." The high school production will also feature new songs that audiences will love!
Music Theatre International (MTI) will begin licensing for other schools and regional theatres to have the opportunity to perform this well-known title. Truman has worked with MTI on many of their pilots and premieres in recent years, piloting well-known musicals such as “Les Miserables” and “Rent.”
Tracey Gatte, Truman’s Director, is grateful to add this title to Truman Drama’s history.
“To take on more iconic film characters, like Charlie and Willy Wonka, and bring them to our stage is exciting and an honor,” she said.
