Teaching Assistant Requirements

Paraprofessionals (also known as Teaching Assistants) work under the supervision of a certified teacher to support students and classroom instruction. They assist with learning activities, student support, and daily classroom needs. Paraprofessionals are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of professional development each school year.

To qualify, candidates must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Hold an associate degree or higher,
  • Have completed two years of college coursework (48 college credits), or
  • Pass a state-approved academic assessment demonstrating knowledge in reading, writing, and mathematics.

How to Get Started:

  • Sign up for a training account at PaTTAN. 7 trainings (2 hours per training) all for FREE via PATTAN
  • Complete the 7 online courses in the Bureau of Special Education Para Credential of Competency Entry-Level Training Series and save your certificates.
  • When finished, apply on the district website and include your certificates with your application.
